September Seasonal Produce Report: What’s in Season this Spring?

A bunch of Asparagus

Each month, I team up with abetterchoice.com.au to consult with Australia’s top growers, wholesalers, and fruiterers in the independent supply chain to highlight the best-quality produce available across the country.

Buying in-season generally means you're getting produce at its lowest price, best quality, and supporting Australian growers at the same time.

Whether you’re looking for recipe inspiration or just love snacking on fresh, in-season fruit like I do, this monthly produce report will help you find the best deals!

Asparagus

Spring marks the start of Australian asparagus season, which is exciting! From March to September, we typically rely on imported asparagus, but local asparagus is thicker, crunchier, and sweeter. Prices are also lower, so it’s the perfect time to stock up.

Got leftover veggies? Toss them into this Mushroom and Asparagus Quiche!

Alongside asparagus, sugar snap peas, snow peas, and broad beans are also in season, adding a fresh, crunchy texture to your meals.

Spinach

Spinach is not only versatile (perfect in salads, stir-fries, and even smoothies to sneak in an extra serve of veggies), but it’s also packed with nutrition.

Surprisingly, two cups of spinach contain about 10 grams of protein—not bad for a leafy green!

For something different, try these spinach and ricotta rolls - perfect for spring and footy finals!

Rhubarb

Rhubarb becomes widely available in spring, making it the perfect time to enjoy its tart flavor, which works well in both desserts and savory dishes. Rhubarb is high in fiber for digestive health and contains Vitamin K, which is great for your bones. Just remember to remove the leaves, as they’re toxic.

For a classic spring dessert, try this Rhubarb, Apple, and Pear Crumble!

Broccoli & Cauliflower

Both broccoli and cauliflower are in abundance right now, offering a wealth of nutritional benefits. Broccoli consumption is even associated with a decreased risk of developing some cancers.

For a hearty meal, combine both in this delicious Broccoli and Cauliflower Cheese Bake.

Citrus

Although nearing the end of the season, Australia’s citrus is still going strong, with certain varieties more available than others. Ruby Red Grapefruit, Blood Oranges, and Cara Cara Oranges are still in their prime. Ruby Red Grapefruit is sweeter than traditional varieties, while Blood Oranges and Cara Cara Oranges offer different colors and flavors compared to regular navel oranges.

Sumo Mandarins are also in season and are a must-try if you haven’t already. These large, easy-to-peel mandarins are sweet and juicy, making them a great snack or salad addition.

For a fresh spring dish, try this Salad of Seared Tuna with Seedless Watermelon, Grapefruit, and Avocado.

Mangoes

Mango season is just kicking off in Australia. While prices are still high, they’ll drop as we get further into the season. It’s tempting to grab one now, but holding off until prices and quality improve is a good idea. Still, it’s exciting to know they are available now!

Try sneaking it into this Strawberry and Mango Smoothie!
