October Seasonal Produce Report: What’s in Season this Month?
Creates of peaches with sunlight shining on them
Each month, I team up with abetterchoice.com.au to consult with Australia’s top growers, wholesalers, and fruiterers in the independent supply chain to highlight the best-quality produce available across the country.
Buying in-season generally means you're getting produce at its lowest price, best quality, and supporting Australian growers at the same time.
Whether you’re looking for recipe inspiration or just love snacking on fresh, in-season fruit like I do, this monthly produce report will ensure you know what to look for this month.
Strawberries and Blueberries
It's an exciting time for berry lovers! Both blueberries and strawberries are coming into great supply this month. Australian berries are grown in Queensland and Western Australia during winter, whilst the growing season now moves south along the east coast through New South Wales and into Victoria as we head into summer. Right now, they’re plentiful, with even better quality expected as temperatures rise. It’s the ideal time to indulge in some fresh, antioxidant-packed berries for snacking, smoothies, or desserts.
Bananas
Bananas continue to be in excellent supply this month. They’re not only a versatile and nutrient-dense snack but also the perfect pre-workout fuel, thanks to their carb content. Plus, mark your calendars – National Banana Day is on October 16th! Be sure to grab a bunch and celebrate with your favourite banana recipes.
Avocados
If you love avocados, you’re in luck! We’ve been told Hass Avocados are in good supply currently coming out of Western Australia. They’re packed full of nutrients, healthy fats and fiber, and are a great addition to the diet. Their consumption has even been linked to better overall diet quality. Take advantage of their lower prices this season and enjoy them in salads, on toast, or even straight from the skin with a sprinkle of salt.
Stone Fruits – Nectarines and Peaches
For stone fruit lovers, the wait is over. Australian-grown nectarines and peaches are finally here. Although we’re at the start of the season, meaning prices and quality will improve in the coming weeks, you can already start enjoying these juicy, sweet fruits. Keep an eye out as they get better and better as the weather warms up.
